Part of Into The Wyld at Williamson Art Gallery

This event is part of Weavers, a programme of performances, talks, workshops and readings curated by Dr Silvia Battista as part of Into The Wyld at Williamson Art Gallery. The Weavers program is supported by Liverpool Hope University.

Delve into the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with a storytelling performance and creative workshop for children and families. Follow Gawain’s journey from King Arthur’s court, through the wildness of the Wirral and onwards as he hunts for the Green Knight’s Green Chapel and the fate that awaits him there. Will Gawain keep his oath to the fearsome Green Knight and submit to his deadly axe or will he lose his head?!

Join Dr Madelaine Smart and discover the story of young Sir Gawain’s quest, and explore nature, the relationship between the natural and human worlds and what it means to be human in the context of this medieval tale.

Madelaine completed her PhD in Medieval Literature at the University of Liverpool in December 2023. Alongside her research she worked as Lead Storyteller and Associate Director of The Liverpool Players, performing throughout Merseyside and the North West for the Being Human Festival and at The British Academy in London for their Children’s Literature Week. Her adaptation of The Little Mermaid was made into an audiobook in 2017. As well as translating and editing the narrative of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as part of her studies, she has also adapted and performed in two productions of the story. This will be her third time bringing the tale of young Sir Gawain to life.
